.. time to think

oh, and not to start by rhyming.. but it's been a while between drinks, so to speak.

I haven't blogged in over a month... too long according to the blexperts (ok, so I made that up) but this need to do a certain amount of anything to in some way quantify its value or quality, is representative of a big part of what is wrong with us today.

We measure the success of our countries by their GDP, the virtues of our people by their personal wealth and the health of our species by our ability to challenge our mortality. None of which seem to measure the quality, subjective or otherwise, of our existence or endevaours.

So, for mine, I have taken to blogging when I feel I have something to say.. not when I feel I need to say something. With over 120 million blogs ( http://thefuturebuzz.com/2009/01/12/social-media-web-20-internet-numbers-stats/ ) I don't think you'll be short of something to read, its whether you're able to find something worth reading.

And I've found by blogging less I can do something more, listen. Have you ever noticed how much email you get? sure..  have you ever noticed how when you go on holidays for a week or so, that after a few days the amount of email you get reduces to a trickle? The madness of our own lives is a reflection of the pace of our own conversations echoed back at us.

I tried an experiment in the last month or so. I got rid of every share I owned and closed all my share trading accounts and deleted all the bookmarks to finanical information websites. I've never been so productive, relaxed or happy (a trip to san francisco in the middle there probably helped it along).I'm not suggesting that stuff doesn't matter, if it is your passion, it does. What I am suggesting is that the things we might be told are important.. are likely distractions to that which makes us happy.

They say good design is when there is nothing left to take away, maybe happiness springs from the same well of thought

You'll fit right into Haight-Ashbury... seriously though, agree with your sentiment. Stop and smell the roses, its well worth it.
