dealing with standby
Friday, March 13, 2009 at 11:50PM Small post, but potentially big idea
Why haven't we dealt with standby properly in our devices. We have a plethora of advice now to turn off devices at the wall to reduce our power consumption but it seems odd that we haven't systemised this.
Automation of any tasks ensures it is performed consistently and regularly.
I am thinking that a basic kill switch that operates in between the plug and the wall socket. When it detects a minimal or standby charge it limits flow to the device reducing standby power consumption.
To re-activate the remote simply sends a wake up signal to the device resuming normal power flow.
Input please :)
A few months back I posted a question about dealing better with standby power .. and it seems this gap is being filled with a device launched just recently by Belkin

It seems that to make the numbers work they have bundled it with a surge protector which is probably not a bad idea...
I still think this concept can be taken a step further.. perhaps using a base station and node approach whereby you simply plug things in via the 'standby unit' directly into their normal wall socket. They then are activated / de-activated simply by bluetooth or perhaps even RFID via a central unit.. and you buy as many wall sockets as you need.
