What are we all taking away?

I have found myself in a rhythym of late, which involves my daily lunch time salad. I am happy to say that a relatively inexpensive, freah and decently healthy meal has become my 12pm habit.

Like all consumers I tend to very it a little bit and want something specific to my own tastes, something unique.

It is, however, at the end of the process (lunchtime) that I do what every other consumer does which is to discard the container it all came in and return to my keyboard. It begs the question as to why me and millions of other well meaning people each day are doing this

The major supermarkets in a matter of years were able to drastically reduce the number of 'containers' they provided to their customers simply by reversing the role and providing the consumer with responsibility to buy a bag that they could subsequently re-use. And the well meaning people of australia largely responded. There is of course dischord from some that plastic bags aren't all that bad but you can read that separately ( http://savetheplasticbag.com/ )

I think we need to replicate the success we have had with consumption of plastic bags, with takeaway containers. Although not a prerequisite for action, there is even a business case for doing it.  The consumer buys a re-usable container from anywhere they get their take-away food for $1; the average consumer who gets lunch or dinner 10 times over the course of fortnight will have saved the cost of 10 disposable containeres in that time. But imagine everything else they save.. The same plastics that enable us to have a water bottle for months or years could massively reduce the impact of our takeaway lives.

I envisage a not-for-profit organisation would actually be able to generate revenue to plug back into active efforts for their cause through the running of such a scheme, not to mention invaluable brand awareness.

take away anyone?
